ric’s blog about his brother ‘inspired’ me to share a little about myself…
Last week while reminiscing over the assassination of MLK and all the associated topics, I was reflecting on my own experience of attending an integrated Elementary School in the late sixties. I’ve often wondered if I was being bused, as there were at least 3 schools closer to me – and I have often wondered if the school I attended was formally a “Negro School” as they were called back in that time. But this is not what this blog is about…
I was talking to my Dad on the phone the other night, and I asked him if he recalled anything about the nature of my Elementary School and/or whether he had any recollections about busing, or integration issues. He thought for a bit and said to me, “I really don’t remember anything; I guess by that time [I was the fourth son to be put through school] the novelty had worn off. Like taking baby pictures, by the time the fourth one rolled around, there just wasn’t much interest.”
Thanks, Dad.
Ouch… ummm, well you’re a novelty to me still. And I am your elder. I could be your big brother!
I’ve had to look beyond my home to find a hero – sometimes they’re just not found in our family of origin.
But…you have been adopted with brothers and sisters galore…and the most amazing Father ever!
That’s been my approach…
I have found other heroes. It’s more that my Dad never ceases to amaze me that he can be so insensitive and selfish.
