So, have you seen any of Rev. Wright on the boob tube the last couple days? Not the sound bites – the whole deal – either talking to Bill Moyer, or speaking to the NAACP, or today at the National Press club.
Well, I saw snippets of his talks over the weekend, but got to hear his whole message yesterday.
I thought everything he said made perfectly good sense. His answers were mostly appropriate, and were quite honest and biblical.
My wife was listening too, she didn’t like it that he waffled on the question, “is Jesus the only way to Heaven?”
I’ve been laughing at all the media reporters coming down so hard on Rev. Wright, calling him racist, and egotistical, and crazy. I think he was encouraged (read: egged on) by all his supporters yesterday, so he was preaching more than public speaking.
I wonder if he simply isn’t representative of his generation. I might need to get my buddy Jason (different than *our* Jason) to weigh in on this.
As a general when it comes to our ‘sound bite’ culture, I don’t pass judgment on an individual based on a clip of something he said.
If you listen to the sound bites only you might be forgiven for thinking this guy a wing nut…
But if you listen to the sum total of what he said and in its proper context…what he said makes sense!!!
America HAS indeed done some horrible things to many cultures. We need to hold a mirror up to our images of what it is to be American and realize that that not everything done in the past was good… Rev. Wright was reminding us of that.
I find it interesting that the media has been so consumed with Rev Wright. Yes, he has said some things that could be considered “nutty”, but I don’t see where he is any more outrageous than some of the other ministers who have stuck there heads into the political arena. Jerry Falwell said that homosexuals and non believers were partially responsible for the 9-11 tragedy. Was he condemned for that? Not really. In fact he was on a monthly conference call with George Bush. It just seems like a double standard.
It is I Jason Once Again. I saw the Moyer interview and I agree with you all. Definetly those sound bytes make him out to be a nut, but that sermon in its entirety makes sense. Rev. Wright’s usage of that passage in Jeremiah “If my people, who are called by MY NAME, will turn from their wicked ways and seek my face….” that is spot on. How many times have any of us sat in church and heard the pastor speak on something that is wrong with this country and essentially say ” No, Its not GOD bless America, how about …. America, BLESS GOD!”
A little side note. Tim you spoke of Jerry Fallwell’s comments. We could go on and on about the judgemental, racist and unchristian “Christian Right”. I mean there is Fallwells constant camments, Those moronic and even hate filled by Pat Roberts advocating murder/assassination and many by their followers. The real travesty to this whole saga is that in the media, only Tavis Smiley on “The Tom Joyner Morning Show” and Bill Maher on “Real Time” have even mentioned Pat Buchanan’s Racist Tirade “A Brief For Whitey”
Tim- thanks for stopping by and adding to the discussion. The double-standard is as clear as black and white, don’t you think?
JC – greetings, my brother. Glad to see you popped in as well.
I’ve been amazed at how much the media is stirring the pot with the Wright affair. I wonder if they aren’t being paid by someone, or if ‘the man’ hasn’t finally found a chink in the Obama armor and is trying to put down this whole notion of a black man running for president.
Still, Obama is leading in # of states, popular vote, and delegates. In the news this morning is an announcement of a Clinton super delegate shifting to the Obama camp – and urging others to do so also.
I’m going to find the Wright speeches/sermons and post links at some point – I think his message deserves to be heard.
